Polhill Campus Centre
Client: University of Bedfordshire
Total Project Cost: £3.4 million
Gross Floor Area: approximately 2,100 sq. m
Service: Mechanical & Electrical Building Services Design
Designed to be a naturally ventilated solution to a complex brief, the building accommodates many functions; a school of the performing arts, campus administration offices, a base for humanities, a source of refreshment for the whole campus as well as a new public theatre for Bedford.
The environmental design strategy combines several approaches, but in the 285 seat auditorium a plenum beneath the raked theatre seats supplies fresh air to the auditorium. The plenum is formed with a blockwork labyrinth to form thermal mass; this thermal mass plays a crucial part of the summer night time cooling strategy.
