Allowing night time ventilation to cool the thermal mass allows coolth to be stored and this coolth is then used to reduce the supply air temperature allowing the heat gains in the auditorium to be controlled. This is a refinement of the successful strategy used on the Lichfield Garrick Project.
Auditorium exhaust air is collected at high level in the lighting gallery and expelled through the roof via acoustic boxes. The use of air tight dampers in conjunction with a building fabric which is over twice as air tight as the mandatory minimum results in a highly responsive natural ventilation system.
